Acapella tracks: where can you find them?

Gepubliceerd in Tech Tips

A remix is often the vocal part of a song mixed with the instrumental part of another song, or more than one song.

The 2 major types of vocal tracks are:

  • a cappella [a kkapˈpɛlla] or acapella = a vocal song or section intended to be heard solo (in latin "a capella" means "in the chapel", so it is the song as one could hear in a chapel, with no instrumental backing),
  • isolated vocal track = a vocal track originally not intended to be heard solo. It may be a separate recording of a microphone (or several microphones) in studio/performance or the result of a processing to extract the voice from an audio track merging the voice(s) and musical instruments,

For the sake of clarity, vocal tracks are hereafter called acapellas even when they are isolated vocal tracks.

You can find on Youtube tons of acapellas to learn, train and have fun:

Vegas Mode / Light animations on Hercules DJ controllers

Gepubliceerd in Tech Tips

When pluging the DJ controller to a computer, the lights of the controller switch on and off to form a light show called Vegas Mode.
It shows which keys are backlit, it animates your booth in a party when you stop DJing,  and it can also be used in your Youtube videos.
Here are the controls to start the Vegas Mode at any moment:

Instant (and short) Vegas mode

  • DJControl Instinct           Deck A (Pitch Bend Minus + Pitch Bend Plus) + Deck B (Pitch Bend Minus + Pitch Bend Plus)
  • DJControl Air                   Deck A (Pitch Bend Minus + Pitch Bend Plus) + Deck B (Pitch Bend Minus + Pitch Bend Plus)
  • DJControl Air +                Deck A (Bank 1 + Bank 2) + Deck B (Bank 1 + Bank 2)
  • DJConsole Rmx2             Deck A (Pitch Bend Minus + Pitch Bend Plus) + Deck B (Pitch Bend Minus + Pitch Bend Plus)
= its plays instantly a Vegas Mode animation, and stops at the end of the animation

Non Stop Vegas Mode
  • DJControl Wave               Switch OFF the battery, press right deck SAMPLE button, connect the USB and keep the Sample button pressed down for a long time=>  Non stop Vegas Animation
  • Universal DJ                     Set Universal DJ on tablet mode, and plug the USB => Non stop Vegas animation
  • DJControl Jogvision          Press Left-deck Preview + Load A + Load B + Right-deck Preview => Instant Vegas animation, then 25 seconds off, then non stop Vegas Animation
  • P32 DJ                              Plug P32 DJ to the USB port of a computer or to  a USB power supply, the Vegas mode starts automatically (after 5 minutes if P32 DJ is connected to a computer, after 2 minutes if it is connected to a USB power adapter)
  • DJControl Instinct P8        Plug the USB port to a computer or a USB power supply, the Vegas mode starts after 3 minutes

Versions of music tracks: what do Original, Radio Edit, Dub, etc.. mean?

Gepubliceerd in Tech Tips

Online music stores offer several versions of the same music, called Original, Radio Edit, Instrumental, Extended, ...

What does each version mean?
- Original, or Original Mix, or Original Edit: the track released originally by the artist,
- Radio, Radio Edit or Radio Mix: a shortened version of the track, 3 to 4 minutes long: the part removed may be the intro and outro
- Extended, Extended Mix: a longer version of the track, often 6 o 8 minutes long, for example with a loop of the instrumental track after the second chorus,
- Club mix, club edit: an extended mix with a DJ friendly intro and outro = the intro/outro have a stable rhythm one can dance on,
- Dub mix: a remix of a track using a limited portion of the vocal part (for example a few words) playing over a more complete instrumental track
- Instrumental mix: audio track with only the instruments, no singing voice: a great format for karaoke and for DJing
- Acapella: audio track with only the singing voice(s), no instrument: a great format for DJing

Use a the same time the computer built-in sound card and the DJ controller audio in Mac OS

Gepubliceerd in Tech Tips

When the DJ software audio setup menu lets you select 1 audio device while you wish to use 2 sound cards simultaneously, the solution in Mac OS is aggregating devices.
The aggregate device is 1 virtual sound card aggregating 2 (or more) sound cards.

Here is an example to play
- the mix on the Mac built-in sound card
- the preview on the headphones output of the DJ controller Universal DJ
- in Djuced 40 3.1.0, in Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite).

1) Connect your DJ Controller to the Mac computer.

2) Set your 2 sound cards at the same sampling rate
- In Mac OS top bar, go to Go > Utilities
- Run Audio MIDI Setup
- If you don't come directly to the Audio Devices menu, go to Window > Show Audio Devices
- Select your DJ Controller, check its audio format, for example 44100 Hz with Hercules Universal DJ

- Select Built-in Output, make sure the audio format is the same as in your DJ controller, 44100Hz (=44.1kHz)

3) Create an aggregate device
- at the left bottom corner of the Audio Devices window, you have a + sign: click on it, and select "Create Aggregate Device"

- You can let it called "Aggregate Device" or give to this device the name you want, for example " Aggregate - Computer & Universal"
- In the list of audio devices included in the Aggregate device, check in the Use column the 2 audio devices "Built-in Output" and Hercules Universal DJ

Leave Audio MIDI Setup.

4) Run Djuced 40
- Go to the Settings: click on the gear wheel on the right top corner

 - you reach the audio settings menu
in Audio Device, select the name of your aggregate device
in Master field, select Output 1&2
in the headphones field, select Output 5&6

Click on OK. In Djuced 40, you now play
- the mix on your computer built-in sound card,
- the preview in the headphones output of your Universal DJ.

Setup for DJing with time-code vinyl discs

Gepubliceerd in Tech Tips

DJing with time-code vinyl requires
- a DJ software capable of time-code DJing as VirtualDJ Pro, Cross, and 2 time-code vinyl discs supported by the DJ software
- 2 DJ turntables,
- an DJ controller whose audio interface has 2 stereo inputs supporting phono level if the DJ turntables have a phono output level, for example a Hercules DJ Console Rmx2, 4-Mx, Rmx, Mk4 or Mk2.

Then you have 2 possible installations:
- Either you use no analogue mixer: you then use the Hercules DJ Console mixer controls
- Or you use an analogue mixer: you then use the mixer instead of the central controls of Hercules DJ Console.

A) With no analogue mixer
- Connect the outputs of the turntables to Hercules DJConsole Rmx2 :
  - the turntable located on left on inputs 1-2
  - the turntable located on right on inputs 3-4
  - set the inputs on phono level if your turntables output is in phono level,
  - activates your inputs in your DJConsole Rmx2 control panel,
- Connect the headphones on DJConsole Rmx2 headphones output plug, on front panel or on top panel,
- Connect your speakers on DJ Console Rmx2 outputs 1-2 (dual XLR or dual RCA)
- Play your time-code vinyl discs on your 2 turntables
- Run your DJ software, and calibrate your inputs in time code vinyl mode
- your turntable on left side now controls the left virtual deck, your turntable on the right side now controls the right-side virtual deck.
The connections are as follows

B) With an analogue mixer
- Connect the outputs of the turntables to Hercules DJConsole Rmx2 :
  - the turntable located on left on inputs 1-2
  - the turntable located on right on inputs 3-4
  - set the inputs on phono level if your turntables output is in phono level,
  - activates your inputs in your DJConsole Rmx2 control panel,
- Connect the output 1-2 of your DJConsole Rmx2 to the input 1-2 of the analogue mixer,
- Connect the output 3-4 of your DJConsole Rmx2 to the input 3-4 on the analogue mixer,
- Connect the headphones on the mixer headphones output plug,
- Connect your speakers on the mixer master outputs
- Play your time-code vinyl discs on your 2 turntables
- Run your DJ software, and calibrate your inputs in time code vinyl mode
- your turntable on left side now controls the left virtual deck, your turntable on the right side now controls the right-side virtual deck.
The connections are as follows
