I found the solution after doing a bit more Googling. Here's the FAQ should anyone else be looking to do this.

This procedure will indeed be required when your speakers are not connected to the back of the Inpulse 500

The Microphone and Auxiliary audio input is enabled by default via hardware mixing, meaning that the audio is sent directly to the console's Main output, without any software or configuration necessary.

hello Hajeil Sounak,

Indeed, that's the solution to mix or record an external source (mic input or line input) inside the software (while when you hear the microphone on DJC I 500 master output, it may be played in hardware via the hardware mixing of mic input to the master output).

Googling might give you a closer guide:

If yoou mix with the cross-fader, to prevent the crossfader from cutting the microphone source, you should activate the same microphone input on both deck 3 and deck 4 so that whatever the crossfader position, you keep on playing the microphone in the software.
