Hallo zusammen,

Hello,

Welcome on the forum.
a) It is easy to answer to your first 2 questions:
- you can connect you Samson Tech active monitors to any Hercules DJControl Inpulse DJ controller (200, 300 and 500) as they have 2 RCA outputs (and 500 has also 2 x 6.3mm jack outputs),
- the other gear you need is DJ headphones (or home studio headphones if you have any): do not use hifi headphones, you need headphones with a strong isolation.

b) It is not so easy to answer your other question: which controller you will use and keep for a long time, as it depends on your temper, how much time you use on the DJ controller, and what you want to do.
If you want to start DJing at home, a DJControl Inpulse 300 is perfect.
If you want to start Djing at home, but maybe also, when you feel at ease, go and perform in bars (after covid of course), then you should consider DJControl Inpulse 500, whose additional mixing inputs and outputs, gives more flexibility to connect to anything, and whose feets, in isolating the controller from the table, reduces the risk that a beer spill damages the controller.

Hello,

I do not know what your "normal headphones" are, so maybe they are OK for DJing, maybe not.

Good DJ headphones have:
  1. a rather low impedance, between 20 and 100 ohms (most DJ headphones are between 28 and 64 ohms): higher impedance headphones, as 600-ohms, are nice to hear, but tend to be too soft and to improve the sound instead of showing its artefacts, and the DJ needs to hear all artefacts to avoid playing a bad sound for your audience while believing it is OK
  2. closed earcups: to isolate you from the outside sound, since when mixing for 6 hours close to public address speakers, you must protect your ears
  3. soft earpads: the softer, the nicer the use, and the better the isolation,
  4. instant response, no latency, so I do not think it is possible to preview in bluetooth headphones in a DJ session (in case of latency, if what you hear is delayed over what is played, you cannot synchronise your action with what the audience hears)
  5. deep bass, as the beats grids are on the bass, so you need a full frequency range (20Hz to 20kHz, or larger),
  6. good sensitivity, at 90dB @ 1mW or higher, to be able to have a strong sound level without turning high the headphones preamplifier,
  7. long cable, since you must be free to move while DJing without being limited in your gestures, so in my opinion 1,8m cable are OK, below it is too short (of course, if the cable is a spiral cable, it length must be measured when stretched, and a 1,2m spiral cable can reach 3 m when stretched)

The other 2 features I consider as needed for DJing are not on some famous headphones used for music production and DJing (Sennheiser HD25), but in my opinion, they are not DJ headphones, they are production headphones (I have them, I love them, but not for Djing):
  • circum-aural large earcups, to avoid pressing on the ears (supra-aural design works, but it is less isolating and more tiring),
  • rotary earcups: when I change a gear or a DJ software during a party, I always remove the earcups from my ears, put the headphones around my neck, play a track on the new gear or the new software, and then I take the earcups and place the headphones again on my ears, in that way, if there is a bad setting playing the sound much too loud in the headphones, it not painful and I am not deaf. It is easy with rotary earcups, but if earcups are not rotary, you tend too keep the headphones all the time on your ears, and if a too loud sound is played through high sensitivity headphones, it is painful.
