Optimize your Windows computer for DJing

If you feel your computer in Windows is slow for DJing, you should check the following settings.

1) Switch off the Wifi, Bluetooth, and any other network connection on your computer before a DJ performance.
Network connections consume CPU ressources and may cause crackles in the music.
Letting the Wifi receiver switched on is the most dangerous setting for DJing on a computer, since each time the Wifi receiver of the computer detects another Wifi source, the CPU ressources of the computer will drop of 50%: if someone in the street has a smartphone with Wifi on, your computer detects this Wifi source, scans it, and this Wifi identification process takes up to 50% of the computer CPU ressources, possibly causing crackling.

2) Disable Windows preset made to save energy on the USB.
This preset is set on by default, and it may cause crackling in the sound, and even disconnect the DJ controller on the computer.
  • Right-click on My computer > Properties > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers,
  • Right-click on the first line "USB Root Hub" and click "Properties"
  • Go to the tab "Power Management", and uncheck the box "Allow computer to turn off this device to save energy"
  • Click "OK" and close the dialog box
  • Repeat the same operation on each line called USB Root Hub or USB hub.
3) Close any background software
Real time operations as Djing or video capture require to as much CPU ressources as possible, so you should close any other background software during a DJ performance.

4) If possible, move the mouse far from the USB port where you plug the DJ controller
If the USB port of your mouse is close from the USB port of your DJ Controller, and if you have enough USB ports for it, you should plug the DJ Controller on a USB port far from the mouse USB port, as the click on your mouse may be heard in the audio played on your DJ controller if the USB port are close one from the other.

5) In Windows 7 or in Windows Vista, avoid Aero graphic theme.
Aero graphic themes are CPU intensive, so don't use an Aero graphic theme while doing any real-time task as music production or video capture, select a basic theme instead.

6) Adjust your computer settings for the best performance
- Go to Start > right click on Computer > Properties > Advanced System settings > "Advanced" tab.
- Click on "Settings" in the "Performance" area.
- In "Visual Effects", click on "Adjust for best performance", and press "OK".

7)
If you use a laptop, set your "Power plan" on "High performance".
Go to Start button, and in the search bar, type
power settings

The "Power Options" menu lets you can select your power plan among three preset plans: Balanced, Power saver, or High performance.

Select the High performance power plan.

8) Don't let any USB key connected on the computer
You can use USB keys to copy an audio track on or from your computer, but once it is over, unplug it from your computer. USB keys have a slow access time (even USB keys with a fast transfer rate have a slow access time), so if they are connected to the computer, they decrease significantly the computer performance even for task which don't use the USB keys.
Never play an audio track directly from a USB key: if you uncompress an audio track on a USB key, the access time of the USB key is so slow that you complete computer because slow. If you want to play a track stored on a USB key, copy it on your hard disk prior to playing it.

9) Make sure your disk is not saturated, DJing requires a large available hard-drive space
Windows needs hard drive space to be fast, and playing music requires a significant hard disk space.
When loading audio tracks, the audio tracks are uncompressed in the software and need, either in the hard drive + in the RAM, the same space as if they were in an uncompressed WAV format, even if they are stored in a compressed format as MP3, AAC or WMA.
Examples of hard drive + RAM needed to uncompress 2 tracks of 10 minutes

  • 16-bit/44.1 kHz, 2 tracks of 10 minutes = 201.8 MB
  • 24-bit/96 kHz, 2 tracks of 10 minutes = 659 MB

Hercules unveils its new creations: a line of headphones for DJs

Style, professional sound quality and extended listening comfort.

New York, November 9, 2011 - Hercules, leader in mobile DJing controllers for computers, recently announced that it would be extending its DJ range to include monitoring speakers. Today, Hercules is proud to unveil its latest creations: a line of headphones designed for DJs.

Drawing on its 20 years of audio expertise, the Hercules team is bringing a fresh new personality to the world of DJ headphones by combining professional sound quality and ergonomic design with the comfort demanded by exacting users, whether DJing at home, in the studio or performing live sets.

HDP DJ-Pro M1001: Professional sound and long-wearing comfort

With their stylized design, the HDP DJ-Pro M1001 headphones are perfect for semiprofessional and professional DJs. They usher in Hercules’ signature design featuring a continuous arc from one earpiece to the other, to avoid pressure on the user’s head, while at the same time perfectly shielding the DJ from external sounds. Additionally, their large ear-cups feature the same distinctive relief found on the jog wheels of Hercules’ range of DJ controllers.

With their black color emphasized by blue stripes, the headphones’ provide a stylish, sleek look that has been designed with all head sizes in mind.

Designed for previewing tracks, the HDP DJ-Pro M1001 headphones allow DJs to precisely analyze sounds, thanks to their 5 Hz to 30 kHz frequency range - a very wide audio spectrum, allowing the wearer to hear a precise rendering of their audio tracks, and thereby optimize the different settings before playing the mix for the audience.

The headphone drivers are 50 mm in diameter, guaranteeing the clear sound and deep bass response that DJs expect. Their low impedance (32 ohms) and sensitivity of 107 dB at 1mW provide a powerful audio level which does away with the risk of being overpowered by PA system speakers.

The ear components pivot along 3 axes of rotation: each ear-cup swivels vertically about its hinge by 180°, while the hinge swivels 90° horizontally and toward the inside of the headphones by 120°, providing great flexibility for DJs carrying out one-ear monitoring.
This mechanism also allows for the headphones to be folded and easily transported in their carry bag. Their cable, which measures 3 m in length when extended, can be connected to the left ear-cup for right-handed DJs, or to the right ear-cup for left-handed users.
The large, soft ear pads perfectly cover the shape of the user’s ears, completely shielding the DJ from ambient noise.
Particular attention was paid to comfort when developing the headphones’ structure, this being essential for extended audio previewing sessions.

The Hercules HDP DJ Pro M1001 headphones will be available from late November 2011, at a suggested retail price of $169.99 .

HDP DJ-Adv G501: Style and listening comfort for all DJs

Because style and comfort are not just for professional DJs, Hercules has created the HDP DJ-Adv G501 headphones. Designed for both advanced and amateur DJs, they provide high-quality sound reproduction and excellent listening comfort. Sporting a shape similar to the professional HDP DJ-Pro M1001 version, the HDP DJ-Adv G501 model is distinguished by its black lacquer finish and green highlighting elements.
Its pivoting ear components (with 3 axes of rotation) let the wearer preview tracks with just one ear, and allow for easy folding and transportation.

Designed for precise audio reproduction, allowing DJs to effectively prepare their mixes, this new model of headphones has an impedance of 32 ohms and sensitivity of 102 dB at 1mW providing a strong audio level, 50 mm diameter drivers with accurate bass response, and a 10 Hz to 25 kHz frequency range.

The HDP DJ Adv-G501 headphones will be available from late November 2011, at a suggested retail price of $129.99.

HDP DJ M40.1: The solution designed for all users

Last but not least, Hercules has created a third model for all mixing fans: HDP DJ M40.1. The headphones’ DJ look and two axes of rotation for ear components (ear-cup 180° vertical rotation and 120° hinge rotation toward the inside) will appeal to a large number of users.

Their sensitivity of 95 dB at 1mW and 50 mm diameter drivers provide clear, pure sound: perfect for mixing sessions at home, and also for listening to an MP3 player or other audio device without bothering those around you.

They will be available from late November 2011, at a suggested retail price of $39.99.

Hercules Debuts XPS 2.0 80 DJ MONITOR

Its First Monitoring Speaker System for DJs High-end precision speakers and components designed for DJs offer quality sound restitution for perfecting any mix

New York, NY - (September 27, 2011) - Hercules, a leader and pioneer in digital DJ controllers and a digital audio specialist, is pleased to debut its first monitoring speaker system for DJs. Relying on 20 years of audio expertise, Hercules has created this active monitoring speaker system to be a natural and logical evolution into its DJing product range which was previously comprised of only DJ controllers.

No art without preparation

Because a successful performance depends on a careful mix preparation, monitoring speakers are an essential item in any DJ’s personal studio - for beginners, amateurs and expert DJs alike.

To this end, the Hercules XPS 2.0 80 DJ Monitor speaker system offers precise sound restitution, enabling DJs to become aware of every detail in their sound and to hone their mix to perfection.

Precise design

The XPS 2.0 80 DJ Monitor speaker system was developed with the assistance of Hercules’ specialized DJing teams, and has been subjected to in-depth testing by Hercules’ audio engineers. All have worked with high-end materials and components to deliver the precise, homogenous and quality sound that DJs demand.

The XPS 2.0 80 DJ Monitor speaker system comprises 2 compact wooden satellites, designed to reduce clutter in your home studio. The front face’s curvature has been calculated to ensure a clear and balanced sound flow. Each satellite features a silk-dome tweeter, for sharp and pure treble. At the center of each satellite, a 4-inch woofer with a Kevlar diaphragm - a material offering consistent performance, that is less subject to deformation than other materials - delivers ample and homogenous medium and bass sounds.

Finally, the XPS 2.0 80 DJ Monitor satellites’ front face features a dual port system, often required by DJs to receive and assess all the bass frequencies in their creations.

Perfected ergonomics

Offering simple control over advanced features, the XPS 2.0 80 DJ Monitor speaker system features user-friendly front-mounted buttons that allow DJs to adjust the general volume, as well as bass and treble levels.

The system offers ample connectivity options, enabling them to connect their computer, DJing equipment, mixing device, MP3 player, game console or any other audio source:
- One RCA input (for the main source)
- One balanced TRS input (6.35 mm)
- One line input
- One headphones output (speakers are automatically deactivated when headphones are connected)

Satellite measurements: 10.8 x 7.5 x 7 inches
Right satellite weight: 9.3lbs / Left satellite weight: 6.3lbs
Total power output: 40 W
Peak power: 80 W
Compatible with Windows® 7, XP, Vista, Mac®, DVD/CD players, MP3 players, TVs, game consoles

The Hercules XPS 2.0 80 DJ Monitor will be available late October 2011, at the suggested retail price of $169.99
